IF STONES COULD SPEAK - HELLES

back to if stones could speak

In Çanakkale, a mirror bazaar,
Mother, I’m off to war,
Alas, I’m a child no more !

In Çanakkale, a pitcher is full,
Mothers, fathers, hopes dashed,
Alas, kiss goodbye to your sons !

On Gallipoli, stand rows of willons,
Below, lion-hearted heroes sleep,
Alas, my youth is lost !

The Gallipoli bridge is narrow, impassable,
The water flows crimson, undrinkable,
Alas, my youth is lost !

Departing Çanakkale, my mind at ease,
Not yet at Anafarta, doomsday struck,
Alas, I’ve run out of luck !

Set off from Gallipoli, step by step,
Now, lungs rotten, vomiting blood,
Alas, that’s my life gone for good !

They shot me at Gallipoli,
Buried me before I was dead,
Oh, for the pity of youth !!

From “The Çanakkale Ballad” by Ibrahim Aksu.

Here are burried a number of soldiers of different units of which no further details are know.  They fell as martyrs while defending the Turkish lines during the Gallipoli Campaign.

Translated from the inscription on the Alçıtepe Martyrs Cemetery
